The Chalbi Desert is a real gem, located in Marsabit County, east of the famous Lake Turkana ( the largest desert lake in Kenya), spreading to the Ethiopian border. Covering an area of 100.000-kilometer square, the Chalbi Desert is one of the hottest and arid places in Kenya.

Tour Plan

Day 1 Nairobi - Samburu

Depart very early, and scenic drive through the central parts of Kenya, taking in the farmlands and villages of the Kikuyu–Kenya’s largest tribe. We continue north into Kenya’s heartland, traversing the Rift Valley’s wheat fields and rolling hills of Timau. Arrive in time for lunch at Nanyukithen proceed on to Buffalo Springs with a game drive en route to Sarova Shabah for Dinner and overnight.

Day 02 Samburu - Marsabit

After breakfast, proceed onto Marsabit; we arrive in time for lunch followed by an afternoon game drive in the Marsabit National Park including a stop at �Lake Paradise� The second largest of three crater lakes in Marsabit national park, or more accurately Maar Lake is a natural water-hole in this park which is essentially an oasis, We drive back to Marsabit for a lovely bonfire dinner and overnight.

Day 03 Marsabit - North Horr

In the morning, depart to North Horr, a beautiful oasis at the Chalbi desert’s edge. On this day, you get to drive through the Chalbi desert. It’s a fun and adventurous ride. Enjoy the beauty and spend the night star gazing. Lunch, dinner, and overnight and at North Horr Manyatta.

Day 4 North Horr - Loiyangalani

After breakfast, depart for Loiyangalani, the common term used for the South-Eastern shore of Lake Turkana across the Chalbi desert, enjoying the Chalbi Desert’s view and the rocky terrain of the surrounding mountains, also by-passing North Horr. Lunch on arrival. Rest in the afternoon at leisure or enjoy swimming at Lake Turkana with an optional boat ride visit to the nearby village and learn more about the El Molo people. The El Molo are believed to have originally migrated down into the Turkana Basin around 1000 BC from Ethiopia in the more northerly Horn region. Owing to the arid environment in which they entered, they are held to have abandoned agricultural activities in favor of lakeside fishing.

Day 5 Loiyangalani- Ngurunit

After breakfast, drive south to Ngurunit, an oasis surrounded by tens of mountains popularly known as the Ndotos. On the way, you get to see the Turkana Wind Farm. The scenery is surreal. After lunch, you may take a short walk up the Ndoto streams to some Natural swimming pools for a swim. This is among the most beautiful places in Northern Kenya. Overnight at Ngurunit.

Transit time: 5hrs

Day 6 Ngurunit - Nairobi

In the morning, visit the basket project and buy some souvenirs. Dive in the rockslides spring once again before heading out back to the city. Stopover at Nanyuki for lunch, then proceed with Nairobi’s journey to arrive early in the evening.
